Position Description

Transition Area Set-up 12noon - 5pm Volunteers will be responsible for the assembly and set up of bike racks in the transition area, placement of signs, cones and miscellaneous tasks. |
Expo Set-up 1pm - 5pm Expo Set-up volunteers will assist staff in preparing the Expo and Race Packet Pick-up areas. This includes labeling and prepping race packets for the athletes. You may also assist in unloading and transporting equipment at the Expo site, and setting up equipment (tables, chairs, crowd control barriers, hanging signage) both inside and outside, or other duties needed to prepare for the Expo. |
Bike Rack Assistant, Morning 10:30am - 2:00pm Bike Rack Assistants are responsible for ensuring only registered athletes enter the transition area and checking helmets and bike number placement upon entry. Assistants will also help athletes find the area where they should rack their bikes and place gear, helping to ensure racking is done correctly. |
Expo Information Roamer 9am - 4:00pm Information Roamers will be provided a list of FAQ (frequently asked questions) and maps by mail prior to their volunteer assignments. Information Roamers will assist athletes and spectators with directions and general event information. You will have a sign and/or hat to identify you as an Information person. |
Packet Pickup, Afternoon 12noon - 4:00pm Packet Pick-up volunteers will distribute race packets to athletes and help to resolve registration problems. You will be trained by the person you are relieving from the morning shift. Afternoon volunteers may also be asked to assist in clean up and crating of excess registration materials. |

Volunteer Assistant, Expo Site 8:45am - 4:30pm Expo Volunteer Assistants will check in volunteers, distribute t-shirts and serve as information desks, to help athletes and spectators with course questions and general information. Volunteer Assistants also support the other volunteers by distributing snacks or acting as a "floater", filling in where more volunteers are needed or if a volunteer needs a break from their position. |
Volunteer Assistant, Race Site 10:00am - 5:15pm Race Site Volunteer Assistants will check in volunteers, distribute t-shirts and serve as information desks, to help athletes with questions regarding start times and bike racking. Volunteer Assistants also support the other volunteers by distributing snacks and filling in if a volunteer needs a break from their position, or jumping in when an area is congested and needs more volunteer help.

Superbooth/goods distribution 9:00am - 4:00pm Super Booth volunteers will be posted throughout the Expo to hand out goodies provided by race sponsors. |
Bike Course 5:30am - 11:30am Bike course monitors are responsible for directing the cyclists, protecting them from traffic at intersections and alerting them to course changes and obstacles. Seattle Police Department will provide traffic control at all intersections and four-way stops. Monitors must keep spectators off the bike course and remove any debris in the road near their assigned area. If a cyclist goes down, monitors are responsible for directing other cyclists away from the accident. Bike course patrol or medical assistance should be contacted immediately. It is helpful to have a cell phone on the course.

Crossing Guard 5:15am - 12noon Crossing Guards ensure that the spectators do not interfere with the racers by regulating where and when spectators may safely cross the course. Crossing guards stand at areas where spectators are allowed to cross, direct the flow of traffic and prevent spectators from entering restricted areas. The crossing guard volunteer position requires undivided attention and focused concentration for long periods of time to ensure the safety of the athletes and spectators. Crossing guards must be 18 years of age or older.

Finish Line 6:30am - 1:30pm Finish Line volunteers will prepare the finish area to greet the athletes by setting out the medals and helping organize the water station. During the event, volunteers will honor each finisher with her medal and direct finishers through and out of the finish area. Once the last participant has cleared the area, volunteers will help break down and clean up the finish area. |
Fluid Station (Main Venue) 5:30am - 12:30pm Fluid Station volunteers are responsible for setting up the fluid stations in and around Genesee Park, distributing water to the athletes and breaking down the stations after the race. Volunteers are responsible for clean up of the cups near their area during and after the event. |
Day of Race Packet Pick up 5am - 1pm This position includes checking in athletes, getting signed waivers, and distributing race numbers, swim caps and goody bags. Most athletes will check in on Saturday. At 6:45 am, when the first wave starts, this location becomes an information table for athletes and spectators throughout the event. |

All debris and other obstacles should be removed from the course in the assigned area. The Seattle Police Department will provide traffic control at all major intersections and four-way stops. If a runner falls, monitors are responsible for directing other runners away from the accident. Medical assistance should be contacted immediately. It is helpful to have a cell phone on the course. |
Swim Course Kayakers 5:15am - 10:30am Kayakers assist the swimmers by providing the outside perimeter border of the swim course, preventing swimmers from straying too far off course, and providing a resting place for tired swimmers. They also help keep the swim course safe from non-triathlon related small craft. They may provide verbal support and encouragement to those who stop, and may inquire if the swimmer wants to be transported to the nearest land point so she can walk to her bike and continue the race. They do not make physical contact with the swimmers. They are extra eyes for the lifeguards and alert the guards if they feel a swimmer is in danger. Kayakers should provide their own kayak. |
Swim Exit Ramp Asst. (not Angel) 5:45am - 10:30am Swim Exit Ramp Assistants (NOT SWIM ANGELS) are responsible for directing participants in the water at the swim start or out at the swim finish. Swimmers may be slightly disoriented and fatigued at the finish so you may be helping them get their bearings. Assistants may also be responsible for keeping spectators out of the area between the swim start and finish areas. EXPECT TO GET WET UP TO YOUR KNEES. Consider bringing a wet suit, towel and a warm change of clothes.

Timers 5:45am - 12:30pm Timers are responsible for providing orderly accurate and safe timing for swim finish, bike finish and final finish line. There is a timing training session at 6:15 am, which all timers must attend. Timers will done between 9:00 am & noon, depending on their location. |

Some volunteers will be asked to monitor entrances and exits. Others will be responsible for directing athletes as they move through the area and answering questions from athletes. |
Volunteer Assistant 4:45am - 1:30pm Volunteer Assistants will help set-up the volunteer tent, check in volunteers, distribute t-shirts, snacks and lunch vouchers as volunteers arrive. You will help distribute food to volunteers around the venue and answer questions from athletes and spectators. You may also be asked to relieve volunteers around the race venue during breaks, or provide extra coverage in areas where more volunteers are unexpectedly needed.

Finish Line, Timing Chip Removers 7:00am - 1:30pm Timing Chip Removers work at the Finish Line removing, collecting and ensuring the racer's timing chips are returned. This position can be physically taxing as you will be stooping to remove the chips from athletes ankles. |
Post Race Food Server 6:30am - 12:30pm The Post Race Food Server is responsible for setting up and preparing food for the athletes after they've completed the triathlon. This will include slicing bananas, bagles, etc. |
